McCord's English 190 Section 29 and 31

How do I tell if it is a scholarly journal?

Use the list of criteria on the handout I gave you in class. Look for an abstract, references, information about the author affiliation among other criteria.

How do I decide which database to use?

Click on the yellow research tab on the library home page, then select databases. Explore the databases by subject area for some ideas. You can always ask a librarian to recommend a database.

How do I find my way around the library?

Check out the online library tour at http://libraries.slu.edu/help/tour/welcome.html

How do I use “Find it at SLU”?

Clicking on the “Find it at SLU” button in a database will bring you to the Article Linker page where you can see whether you have access to the full text of the article at SLU. You can also search the catalog for the print version of the journal from this page.

How do I print using Billiken Bucks?

Add Billiken Bucks to your i.d. card using the machine located in the lobby of Pius Library. When you are ready to print, use the same steps you would use to print from any computer.

You need to give your print job a name so you can find it in the queue. A text box pops up where you can fill this information in. Your print job goes to both print stations. Choose either print station. Swipe your card in the reader attached to the monitor of the print station. Find your print job in the queue and select it. Click print. The job prints out at the printer next to the print station.

How do I use MOBIUS?

You can request a book from MOBIUS if SLU doesn’t own the book or if our copy is checked out. Search the MOBIUS catalog from the library home page or get to the MOBIUS catalog by clicking on the orange ‘Search MOBIUS” button at the top of the SLU library catalog page. When you decide what book you want to request, click on “request this item” and select SLU from the dropdown menu. Enter your name and banner i.d. on the next page and select your pickup location. You will get an email in a few days when your book comes in. Pick up your book at the cuirculation desk which is across from the CafĂ© on level 1.

Questions about Lexis-Nexis

If you want more information about using this database, I can go through it with you in person. You can can email me at gillesj@slu.edu to set up an appointment.
